Location
NSFAS accreditation requires student accommodations to be within 20 kilometers of the university. The Department of Higher Education must therefore approve NSFAS-accredited accommodation beyond this threshold. Furthermore, a university or off-campus student housing facility must provide frequent transportation. Moreover, transportation must be available from morning to throughout the day.
Student Rooms
Single student accommodation rooms must be at least 9 square meters in size. Meanwhile, student rooms should be a minimum of 12 square meters in size. Students’ accommodations must meet the following requirements. It will help to create an environment conducive to learning:

Please contact the Mankwe TVET College and make an inquiry. They are likely to less stringent that following the NSFAS route. Alternatively, you can now visit the NSFAS website and apply for accreditation directly with them. From December 2022, they are now accrediting accommodations. They have a fee they charge and for inspections. If you go directly to Mankwe TVET College you are likely not to be required to pay the fee. I suggest you approach the Iqhayiya College and see if they will accredit you. This may be very informal but as long as you can get them to accredit you and allocate students to you should be fine. Unless you want NSFAS to pay you directly, because it is possible that with the College, the students have to pay you.

No, it isn’t. You only don’t qualify for accommodation allowance if you stay with immediate family. For as long as the student stay in a university residence or University-managed off campus accommodation. Students applying for private accommodation allowance must provide the following documents: A signed lease agreement; and Proof of the student’s home address and the student is not residing with immediate family members. So, basically if you are to stay at a private accommodation you must proof to NSFAS that the residence you are staying at is not your home and that it’s not that of your immediate family members. Hope that’s clear.

Thank you for your questions. Starting with question 2. The rental amount is limited to the amount charged by the university for a similar room and the maximum that NSFAS will pay. At the time of writing this response, maximum NSFAS will pay is R6,000 per room per month. This means that, if the University was charging R6,500 per room per month, then the landlord cannot charge more than R6,500 and NSFAS will only pay R6,000 per month. The student may then either opt to pay the top-up or not.
As for question 1, the maximum NSFAS pays leans towards a monthly arrangement

1. It depends on the institutions. Some have formal procedures, especially those that receive the NSFAS funds. Then there are those who are not receiving the funds and these we learn may have some informal procedures that result in instant accreditation.

TUT exact numbers we are yet to find. However, they are all guided by the minimum norms and standards of the Department of Higher Education. 4 seems to be the minimum number, but I don’t recall any student housing offering this number of beds. Six appears to be the minimum I encounter.

You have to approach the university or universities you want to serve and apply there. Some have forms on their websites and some do online applications. They are the only starting point. Once they approve your site, then they notify NSFAS who will then automatically accredit it and pay towards accommodation at your student accommodation.

Kindly note that CPUT and UWC are the two institutions that will accredit your property. Once accredited, it will be NSFAS Accredited. To start the process, you have to approach the two institutions for accreditation. I know that some universities have closed the application process for the 2023 year. I am not sure about CPUT and UWC. It’s worth trying.

It sounds like their accreditation is very informal and quick and that they are among institutions that don’t control the disbursement of funds. I suggest you follow their procedures.

The best thing to do would be to contact the TVET near you. I think it’s Taletso. Please ask them to take you through their process. They have a term for the additional payment, called a topup. So, unfortunately, it means that you have to top up. Why don’t you engage them and tell them that you are NSFAS funded. Some will charge you the NSFAS rate, if they are NSFAS accredited.

It depends on the university or TVET. Because some have a very informal accreditation process, whilst others have a rigorous process. For instance, those that don’t administer the NSFAS funds are likely to have a very informal process. Because in their instance, NSFAS pays the student directly and the student then pays the property owners. The only way to know is to approach the university you want to service.

Generally, and as far as I know, a minimum level of 4 is preferred. Remember that a BBBEE level is used to award a score. So, institutions with a level 1 score higher points as a result. I’m aware of a student accommodation provider who was given a conditional accreditation. Which means that they would only get their full accreditation when they meet their BBBEE minimum requirements.

Yes, most institutions have deadlines. However, it depends on whether they are handling the NSFAS allocations or whether the student gets their money directly from NSFAS. My suggestion is for you to contact Waterberg TVET and establish the facts.

Thank you for connecting with us. When you meet all the requirements, then you can either approach UJ or NSFAS directly. NSFAS is now also accrediting houses from December of 2022. Just shout, if you need the UJ contact details. There are plenty of places in your area that are accredited, so I wouldn’t worry, if I were you.

I suggest that you include photographs of the solar infrastructure you have, as well as a motivation letter to indicate that you are “off the grid”. Additionally, I would include my last municipal account for compliance purposes. Please bear in mind that in cases where you use municipal water the assessor wants to assess the risk that the water may be cut-off for non-payment. Wishing you all the very best.

I trust that you are well.
I think your property would be ideal, given that it’s only 1.2 km from campus. If you want NSFAS accreditation, then you really have two options. Option 1 is to apply for accreditation directly with the University. The second is to apply directly with NSFAS. I take it this will only come into effect next year, so I would go with the university if I were you. The reason is that there are many unanswered questions with the NSFAS route. For instance, I don’t know how much it will cost you and how long it will take for them to attend to your application. Kind regards

We would require you to state the rental amount, provide pictures, indicate what the students gets (Wi-Fi, washing machines, etc), and the exact location of the property. However, we are glad to share with you a number of factors that may assist you to determine the rental amount. For instance, accommodation that’s closer to the FET will be more expensive than accommodation that is very far. Additionally, the amenities and price point of the accommodation is important. Furthermore, NSFAS has guidelines in terms of the maximum you can charge. So, my suggestion is that an answer to all these issues could help you determine that in your area.

Kindly note that I don’t know, if you landlord meets the tax thresholds and therefore unable to comment. I suggest that your landlord should approach a registered tax practioner and make such enquiries. Regarding using someone else’ account number. If as a student you feel the landlord is not living up to the requirement of the nsfas criteria, what are the steps to take?
The accommodation is 10 kms away but does not provide transport, there is one toilet used by 12 students, the washing machine is dead, the freezer has to accommodate 12 students, a six plated stove is used by 12 students, rooms occupied by students, some, do not have desks, lamps or chairs.

I think the best is to enquire with the institution that accredited them. Whether it be the university, TVET College or NSFAS. In that way, you will be able to get assistance. Because the landlord has to be accredited. Maybe at the time of their registration they were given a conditional approval. Like when someone gets approved, but is told to get the transport going in the next month or so. Then they fail to do that.

The primary objective is to prove that you have the legal right to lease or sublease the property to students. The question of the levies is not in the stardards and norms, but the accrediting university may use it to assess risk of whether the property will continue to deliver electricity services to students, as required in the standards and norms.
